2023 USSP ALL-STAR GAME: PATRIOT OVER LIBERTY 9-5

The Patriots flew Air Yordan to a comfortable 9-5 win at Chavez Ravine. Yordan Alvarez homered, doubled and singled his way to the MVP award, and Christian Walker added a 3-run shot that put the Patriots in the lead for good.

Alvarez started off the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo bomb. Matt Olson tied it in the top of the 3rd with a homer of his own, and then Manny Machado, who went 4-for-4, put Liberty up 3-1 with a two-run blast in the 4th. After a Carlos Correa sac fly made it 3-2 Liberty, Francisco Lindor hit a clutch 2-out single to drive in two runs to put Liberty ahead 5-2. The Patriots stormed right back in the next half-inning, getting an RBI single from Alvarez and taking a lead they would never relinquish on the Walker dinger, which was followed by another 3-run homer by Bobby Witt, Jr.

Garrett Cole was good for two solid innings for the Patriots, but Justin Verlander, Tyler Anderson and Christian Javier gave up the five Liberty runs leaving Cole out of the decision. Javier happened to be the pitcher of record when the go-ahead runs scored, giving him the win. Martin Perez gave up both Patriot 3-run home runs in his inning of work to take the loss.

2021 USSP ALL-STAR GAME: LIBERTY OVER PATRIOT 5-2

Fernando Tatis, Jr. made his All-Star Game debut an MVP-winning one by clobbering two homers to lead Liberty to a 5-2 win over Patriot.

This game was never actually played in real life, but there is no COVID among the ones and zeroes of Strat.

Tatis, Jr. led off the top of the 2nd with his first homer, a majestic blast into the left-centerfield seats off starter Kevin Gausman. Rowdy Tellez then knocked in Ronald Acuna after he had doubled to make it 2-0 Liberty. After a Luke Voit single with one out in the 5th, Tatis, Jr. launched his second dinger, this time off Shane Bieber, into the home bullpen in left to make it 4-0. Bieber walked the bases loaded and was relieved by Aaron Nola who yielded a sac fly to Chris Taylor to complete Liberty's scoring. Brandon Lowe knocked in Juan Soto in the 7th to get the Patriots on the board, and Jose Abreu led off the 9th with a solo homer off Daniel Bard to make it 5-2. The Patriots tried to start a 2-out rally with a single by Freddie Freeman and a walk by AJ Pollock, but Brad Hand got Cesar Hernandez on strikes to complete the save.

Liberty starter Trevor Bauer worked three scoreless innings to get the win and Gausman took the loss.

Mike Trout continued his All-Star Game heroics with 2 homers, Anthony Rendon homered and doubled twice, and Christian Yelich hit a game-breaking Grand Slam and added a defensive gem to power the Patriot Conference over the Liberty Conference 8-5.

Trout's first homer, a 2-out 2-run blast in the top of the 1st, scored Michael Conforto, who had doubled. Nolan Arenado of Liberty doubled home Francisco Lindor, who had also doubled to make it 2-1 after one.

Arenado and DJ LeMahieu went back-to-back in the 3rd to propel Liberty into the lead. Rendon answered in the top of the 4th to tie the game with a solo shot. It all came apart for Liberty in the 5th off losing pitcher Zac Gallen, who walked Willson Contreras, Jorge Soler, and Jose Altuve to load the bases for Yelich, who cleared them with an enormous drive over the right-field fence to put the Patriots up 7-3. Trout followed with his second homer to make it 8-3. Carlos Santana tried to start a Liberty comeback with a 2-run shot off Aaron Nola in the 6th, but that was the end of the scoring. The Patriot bullpen slammed the door with 6 strikeouts and a great fly-out double play to get Yoan Moncada rounding second on a diving catch by Yelich.

Trout, Rendon, and Yelich shared the MVP award with each making huge contributions. John Flaherty was the pitcher of record during the 5-run 5th and got the win.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a mammoth Grand Slam at Marlins Stadium to earn himself the MVP award as Liberty won for the 3rd straight time over the Patriots.

It wasn't much of a contest. After Stanton's slam, Nolan Arenado, Cody Bellinger, Francisco Lindor, and Jose Abreu all went deep to extend the lead to 11-0. Steven Souza finally answered in the 9th for the Patriots, but it was far too little and far too late.

Max Scherzer got the win after 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Zack Godley. Corey Kluber, who yielded the Stanton granny, took the loss for the second straight year.

Greg Holland was sent in to close out the no-no, but after striking out Ian Desmond, he managed to walk pinch-hitter Ben Zobrist, get a force play for the second out, and then walk Ryan Zimmerman and Chris Davis. Justin Upton then broke up the gem with a single to left, scoring Zobrist. Kanley Jansen was called in to relieve the struggling Holland, and he struck out Adrian Gonzalez to seal the victory.

Tim Lincecum gave up the first five runs and took the loss. Liberty starter Matt Cain pitched well enough in his three innings to get the win in the modified All-Star scoring system. Gonzalez homered in the 3rd, and then the game was broken open in the 7th when the Patriots scored five runs off Jon Lester on six hits, an error and a hit-by-pitch.

2010 USSP ALL-STAR GAME: PATRIOT OVER LIBERTY 4-3

In a result eerily similar to the real 2009 All-Star Game, the Patriot Conference prevailed over the Liberty Conference 4-3 at Busch Stadium. Game MVP Joe Mauer delivered the game-winning RBI single off J.P. Howell with two outs in the top of the ninth after Howell had wild-pitched Albert Pujols to third. It was Mauer's third hit of the night.

Michael Young then drove in Upton with a single for the tying run.

Francisco Rodriguez got the win, and Jonathan Broxton went the final two-thirds in the bottom of the ninth for the save. David Aardsma took the loss.

LIBERTY DEFEATS PATRIOT 6-2 IN 12 INN.

The Liberty Conference broke through in the top of the 12th inning with four runs to defeat the Patriot Conference 6-2 at Yankee Stadium in the 2009 USSP All-Star Game.  Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a Jose Reyes RBI single, but the Patriots answered back in the bottom of the inning with a Josh Hamilton two-run homer.  Justin Morneau tied it for Liberty in the 7th with a solo shot, and the teams traded zeroes after that until the 12th.  Mariano Rivera entered the game in the 10th for the Liberty Conference and Joakim Soria came in during the 11th for the Patriot Conference.  The two closers each extricated their teams from perilous man-on-third-and-none-out situations.  Soria, however,  was no match for the Liberty squad in the 12th as Kevin Youkilis blasted a two-RBI double to break the deadlock and Adrian Beltre and Pat Burrell each drove in a run for insurance.

The MVP of the game was Rivera, who pitched 2-2/3 scoreless innings (including a perfect bottom of the 12th) with only one walk allowed and four strikeouts to get the win.

GUNSLINGERS TURN TO COLLEGE STARS IN 2008 DRAFT

San Antonio - The San Antonio Gunslingers drafted three highly regarded college players in the 2008 Draft, prompting observers to wonder if owner Tim Lowell wanted to re-live his days at Clarkson University in the '80s. "Yeah, right, 8 am engineering classes in 20-below weather, I'd love to re-live that," said Lowell. "But maybe if I was 6'5" and 200 lbs. like Brian Matusz, I wouldn't have spent most Friday nights holed up in my apartment watching 'Mr. Belvedere'. That Bob Uecker, what a card!" Besides University of San Diego pitcher Matusz, Lowell also tabbed Missouri hurler Aaron Crow and South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak. "(Gunslinger manager Bill) Lee suggested picking Smoak," remarked Lowell. "That guy's got a one-track mind." Other notables in the 'Slingers 2008 class include first-round pick Kosuke Fukudome, a Japanese import, and 40-year-old reliever Doug Brocail. "I hope Fukudome has a better interpreter than Ichiro," Lowell said. "Ichiro's guy sounds like he learned English by watching too many 'Kung Fu' re-runs. As for Brocail, he and I can reminisce about when Madonna was still young and only medium-skanky."

LOWRY WALKS THE PLANET IN SPRING GAME

Phoenix - San Antonio Gunslinger lefty Noah Lowry made what most baseball people think had to be Spring Training history by walking nine batters in one official inning of work in a recent Cactus League game. Lowry's line read 1 IP, 0 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 9 BB, 0 SO, 0 HR. Bruce Bochy told reporters, "He said he had trouble gripping the ball. He couldn't feel it." After the game, Lowry did have a death-like grip on the obvious, saying, "I'm upset my spring has started the way it has." When told of that quote, Gunslinger manager Bill Lee replied, "Yeah, him and me both. That was Rick Ankiel-like out there today. Too bad Lowry can't hit worth a damn or I might stick him out in the outfield to see if lightning could strike twice."

The Patriot All-Stars emerged victorious from an unprecedented offensive frenzy, winning 13-11 behind the five RBI of Raul Ibanez, the game MVP.  Roy Halladay, who worked a clean 2/3 of an inning, took the win, while losing pitcher Jeff Francis was pounded for five runs while retiring only one batter.  Francisco Rodriguez recorded the final out to pick up the save.

The Liberty All-Stars took an early lead on Alfonso Soriano's leadoff homer, but immediately fell behind when Albert Pujols and Troy Glaus homered in the second for the Patriots.  Carlos Beltran hit a three-run round-tripper in the 3rd to give the Libertys another lead, which they extended to 6-3 in the 4th on doubles by Garrett Atkins, Brian McCann and Soriano.  The Patriots stormed back to tie in the 6th when Ibanez drove in the first three of his five RBI on a bases-clearing triple.  Liberty seemed to put the game away in the bottom of the frame with a four-run rally, highlighted by Carlos Lee's two-run double.  It turned out to be woefully short, though, as the Patriot All-Stars hung up a 7-spot in the 7th, with Miguel Cabrera's two-run single giving the Patriots the lead which they would not relinquish, and Ibanez adding a two-run homer for insurance.  The Liberty All-Stars tacked on a run in the bottom of the 7th on a Jose Reyes triple and an A.J. Pierzynski RBI single for the final score of the game.
